The Problem:Due to the massive overpopulation problem in kern County, dogs like the ones depicted are entering the County Shelter on a daily basis.
The County Shelter is overwhelmed by the influx of animals, and is not equipped to take care of their needs.
Last year 26,354 animals were impounded. Of those, 80% (21,083) were euthanized.
In Los Angeles, they have decreased their euthanasia rate by 62% in the last 5 years. In the last year, 19,500 animals were euthanized, which is less than in Bakersfield, even though we are a much smaller county.
The Answer:Kern County needs to implement a no cost spay/neuter program.
How can Kern County afford this? Example: A capital investment of $250,000 will alter 2000 animals in the first year. Results: 20,000 surplus animals are eliminated. At a minimum, 50% or 10,000 of those animals will not be impounded into our shelter, saving Kern County 1.1 million dollars.
Remember, this is a community problem, and is therefore the community's responsibility to change it! Help us to inform the Kern County Board of Supervisors that we, as taxpayers, want a free spay/neuter program to put an end to the killing and neglect.
