JANNIE HELTON - SECRETARY

Welcome to TREAT's website. My name is Jannie Helton and I am a Board Member and the Secretary of TREAT

When the KC Animal Control opened its' doors on Tuesday, Jan. 10, they discovered a severely thin, weak and near death Boxer/mix puppy that was left outside the door. The pup also had a badly infected bite wound to the top of his head. The shelter transported the 6-8 week old pup to a veterinary hospital where they treated the wound and a drain was inserted in his head to help drain the fluid that was building. He was then returned to the shelter a couple days later with meds and instructions for care of the head wound. He was so weak he was unable to walk or stand and needed to be hand-fed, plus the wound carefully monitored. On Sat., the shelter contacted rescue to inform them they were in need of a foster home for him, because they would be closed Sunday and Monday was a holiday. They were not setup for the special care he needed during this time and were concerned he would die without a foster home. This is how my involvement began with animal welfare. I volunteered to fostered Lucky (named because he was "lucky" to be alive). I already had 2 little Poms and a Doxi-Chi mix, which was adopted from the pound, so it was not possible for me to adopt him. Alpha Canine Sanctuary had agreed to take Lucky once he could stand and eat on his own. On Feb. 8, I delivered Lucky to Alpha weighting in at a whopping 9 lbs. and running all over the place. On Feb. 14, Lucky was adopted and now has a "forever home." I have been fortunate enough to foster several others that have found forever homes; but what is heart wrenching is the look on all the others when I go to pull the fosters and they are left behind.

I hope you find our website informational and urge your participation to actively get involved and help the abundance of unwanted animals in Kern County.

Sincerely,

Jannie Helton

An Animal's Prayer I ask for the privilege of not being born... not to be born until you can assure me of a home and a master to protect me, and a right to live as long as I am physically able to enjoy life... not to be born until my life is precious and men have ceased to exploit it, because it is cheap and plentiful.
