My husband, Jed and I have often joked that ours is a convalescent home for dogs. And while we laugh about it, it actually holds a lot of truth. We initially became involved with Boxer Rescue Los Angeles when we were looking for a companion for our 12 year old friend, Delilah. We decided on Trina (then called CeCe). Unfortunately, during the adoption process Delilah passed on and is now waiting for us at the Rainbow Bridge. We decided that we should still adopt Trina, as she still deserved a home. She is one of the sweetest dogs we had ever met.
Trina has a story of her own. She is now ten and was used as a breeding dog for many years, which is evident by just looking at her. After they were finished using her as puppy machine, Trina was left at a kill shelter. A sad and horrible fate was ahead of her had it not been for BRLA. They rescue all boxers, regardless of age.
On the day that we were taking Trina home, we also met Leo (then called Sufrido). Now Leo is the most precious little boy, but you wouldn't know it from first glance. He has had a rough life prior to arriving at BRLA. He is arthritic and sore from his previous life where he obviously didn't get a lot of love. There was no way that we could go away without taking this sweet guy, too!
Since Trina and Leo have come to live with us, we agree that adopting them was one of the most rewarding things we have ever done. Adopting seniors is not only selfless and one of the easiest ways to give love, you will be rewarded tenfold. Trina and Leo are just so happy and appreciative to have a family to love them. Honestly, they have taught me so much about love and life, being thankful for what you DO have, and really making the most of each day.
It nearly brings me to tears to see my little Leo do the boxer wiggle. We remember that on the day he came home with us he could hardly walk. These dogs and the other seniors at BRLA are so grateful to simply be in a home. All it takes is some love, and you will be surrounded by gratitude and contentment.
So, if you are thinking of adopting your first dog, or want to add to your family, consider a senior. They have a lot to teach and a lot of love to give. They truly bless your life!
TREAT would like thank BRLA for letting us reprint this story from their Boxer Rescue Newsletter as well as a very special thank you to Sarah & Ted Tuttle for sharing their story.
